Our History

Manitowoc County Habitat for Humanity Celebrates its 20th Year in 2009!

Cick here for an unabridged history of the Manitowoc County Habitat for Humanity organization.

  • 1988 — The local affiliate for Habitat for Humanity was formed and incorporated as a nonprofit organization. The first partner family was selected and groundbreaking was held.
  • 1989 — We were officially accepted as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. In fall, our first Habitat home was completed in Two Rivers. A new home was also begun in Two Rivers, across the street from the first home.

  • 1990 — A home was given by Pfeffer Funeral Home in Manitowoc, moved to a site one block away, and renovated.

  • 1991 — A workgroup organized for Habitat’s 15th Anniversary celebration spent a week framing two homes on Mary Street in Manitowoc. Both homes were finished and dedicated on the same day in November.

  • 1992-1994 — Three additional homes were moved and renovated in Manitowoc. A new home was also built in Two Rivers.

  • 1995-1996 — A campus expansion at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center resulted in 9 homes being donated. All houses were moved on the same day to land purchased on South 21st and 23rd Streets in Manitowoc. Three homes were successfully renovated by the next summer.

  • 1996-1999 — The six remaining homes from Holy Family Memorial were renovated and partner families found. Each home was different and offered new challenges. One home was beyond repair and was demolished; a new home was built on its foundation.

  • 2001 — The board of directors decided to hire an executive director to provide full-time focus on the mission of Habitat for Humanity, as well as monitor existing and future mortgages and liens.

  • 2006 — Two homes were constructed. and partner families found.  A grant from Thrivent Financial sponsored one of the homes.

  • 2008 — The 32nd home was completed in Manitowoc County since 1989.

  • The First Presbyterian Church continues to provide office space and meeting areas.

  • The affiliate name was changed from "Two Rivers-Manitowoc Habitat for Humanity" to "Manitowoc County Habitat for Humanity" to reflect our true service area.

  • Manitowoc County Habitat for Humanity continues to build on the land it owns in Manitowoc and on several sites in Two Rivers.
